Legionnaires,
As we move forward in this membership year, I want to speak directly to the value of what it means to be a member of the American Legion.
Membership is more than a card—it is a continued commitment to service. It is the promise that we stand for veterans, their families, and our communities. Every member strengthens our voice at the local, state, and national levels. Because of you, we are able to advocate for better benefits, provide life-changing programs, and ensure that no veteran is forgotten.
Our legislative efforts remain focused and deliberate. We are working to protect veterans’ benefits, expand access to care, and ensure Iowa remains a leader in supporting those who served. At the same time, we must be clear in our stance when legislation threatens those priorities. The American Legion of Iowa stands opposed to SF2466, as it does not serve the best interests of Iowa’s veterans. We will continue to advocate firmly and respectfully on behalf of those we represent.
I also want to remind every Post of an important responsibility—the Consolidated Post Report is due June 15. This report tells the story of your impact. It documents the hours served, the lives touched, and the difference you make in your community. It is not just paperwork—it is proof of our relevance and strength as an organization.
As we push toward the end of the membership year, I ask each of you to do your part:
Reach out to expired members. Invite a new veteran to join. Share your story. Our future depends on the effort we make today.
We are strongest when we stand together — united in service, committed to advocacy, and proud of our mission.
For God and Country,
Darrin Alderson
Department Commander
American Legion of Iowa
