
The Department of Iowa regrets to announce the death of Past Department Commander Larry Swann on December 8, 2025.
Larry was born on August 27, 1934, in Marion, Iowa, to George and Tressie Ague Swann. Larry served in the US Navy from 1952 to 1954. He started his career as an electrician with Grout Electric and eventually co-founded E&S Electric in Cedar Rapids.
Larry married Delores Joan Vislisel on June 7, 1958, at St. Peter & Paul Catholic church in rural Solon.
Larry soon became very active in the Solon community. He was a member of the Solon Fire Department, American Legion Post #460, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus.
Larry was involved in many community projects. He was the founding father of Solon Beef Days, the Solon Legion Ball Diamond and more recently, the Veterans Memorial.
Larry was a Paid Up For Life Member of American Legion Post #460 in Solon. Larry took on many leadership roles, including Solon Post Commander, 1st District Commander, and Department of Iowa Commander for 2005-2006.
Larry also served for many years on the board of The American Legion of Iowa Foundation and was directly involved in starting the American Legion Foundation Golf Outing held in Solon.
Larry was thrilled to be named the 2025 Solon Senior of the Year.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at 9:00 am, St. Mary Catholic Church, 1749 Racine Ave NE, Solon, Iowa, prior to services.
Funeral Mass for Larry will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1749 Racine Ave NE, Solon, Iowa.
