Iowa National Guard Soldiers Killed in Syria

The American Legion joins the people of Iowa and the nation in mourning the loss of two Iowa National Guard soldiers and a U.S. civilian interpreter who were killed while serving in Syria. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, loved ones, and fellow service members during this incredibly difficult time.

These guardsmen were citizen-soldiers – Americans who balance family, careers, and community life, yet step forward when the nation calls. Their willingness to serve in dangerous conditions overseas reflects the very best of our country.

We also keep in our thoughts and prayers the service members who were wounded in this attack, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

The American Legion strongly supports our men and women deployed abroad. We urge our nation’s leaders to ensure that those serving in harm’s way have every possible resource, protection, and intelligence necessary to carry out their missions safely.

Today is about honoring sacrifice – not only the sacrifice made on the battlefield, but the sacrifice borne by military families and communities here at home. Iowa has lost two of its own, and the American Legion stands with Iowa.

We will continue to honor the fallen, support the living, and advocate for those who serve.

Thank you.
