Hundreds of attempts to defraud veterans through paper-based interactions are reported each month. In response the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) has been implementing a online process for veterans to use in setting up or changing their direct deposit information. This online process is much more secure and will become the exclusive process for enrollment or changing direct deposit information.
The start date for that online process is now Tuesday, October 13. This is an earlier transition date than previously announced. VBA has moved up the change due to increased reports of attempted fraud.
Security threats while using paper forms and faxes are immense. This expedited change is needed to reduce hundreds of attempts, reported each month, to defraud Veterans through paper-based interactions. While online changes with the more secure two-factor authentication process are strongly encouraged, any Veteran with questions about the process can call the VBA helpline at 1-800-827-1000 (TTY: 711), or by going to their nearest VA regional office (if accepting in-person appointments) and change this information in person.
