Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a "learning by doing" program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary which is held annually the third week of June at Iowa State University, Ames, IA

Approximately 300 girls attend Iowa Girls State from around the state of Iowa. All are sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Units and many are recommended by their schools or community leaders.

Iowa Girls State is an Americanism Program of the American Legion Auxiliary so flag raising is an important start to each day and flag lowering happens in the evening. In addition, many years a local Legion Post does a flag disposal ceremony for the girls which explains how flags are properly disposed of once they become unusable.

Another activity the girls experience through the week is campaigning and running for office on the city, county and state level...

...and then they wait for the result of those elections.

Every night the girls meet on their own floors which are also their cities and share experiences they've had that day, prepare for the next day and just hang out and get to know each other better.

Iowa Girls State also puts out several newspaper issues throughout the week and girls apply to be the newspaper reporters. The reporters are encouraged to keep their own floors informed on what is happening at Girls State and across the state.

in addition to creating and running a political machine, the girls have motivational speakers who come and speak with them on a daily basis. One of their favorite speakers has been Governor Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

During their free time the girls get to hang out with each other, one night they have a scavenger hunt and another day they take a tour of the ISU Campus and spend time in the campus book stores for some much needed shopping.

The culmination of the week is the inauguration ceremony where the newly elected governor is installed along with her top six state officials.

Every girl at Girls State is a membe rof the chorus which performs at inauguration.

Many scholarships are also presented during the evening with the largest being the American Legion of Iowa Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $5000 and the Samsung Scholarship which can ultimately be up to $20,000 if chosen as a National winner..

In addition, two lucky girls are chosen as Girls Nation Senators who get to travel to Washington DC in July and experience a similar program on a federal level instead of a state level.
